Over the course of 2 days, learners will dive into the core theory as set out in the IET Code of Practice. They’ll gain a clear understanding of how to assess appliance safety, carry out tests, and maintain accurate records in line with industry standards. On the final day, learners will complete an online multiple-choice exam at our state-of-the-art City & Guilds testing centre to demonstrate their theoretical knowledge.

Following successful completion of the exam, they’ll take part in a practical assessment using a variety of portable appliances in our dedicated training environment—putting their skills to the test in a safe, realistic setting.

How you’ll be assessed.

Assessment will be conducted through a multiple-choice online theory exam and a practical assessment. The theory exam is taken at our City & Guilds testing facility on the final day of the course. Once learners have successfully completed the theory component, they will undertake a practical assessment, demonstrating their ability to carry out visual inspections and electrical tests on a range of portable appliances.

Successful candidates will gain a City & Guilds digital credential that confirms their competence in the In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment (PAT Testing).

How long is the exam?

The online theory exam lasts 1 hour and 45 minutes and consists of multiple-choice questions. It’s open-book, meaning you can refer to the IET Code of Practice during the test—just like you would in real-world scenarios.
